Smokey D.'s sire is an American Bashkir Curly stallion brought to Alaska 15 years ago straight out of the mountains of Nevada. His sire is Benny D., a horse bred by the famous Damele fanily of Ely, Nevada. They used mustangs from the Nevada mountains ever since the early 1930's, when they lost all of their range horses due to an extremely cold winter. The Dameles found the mustangs to have more endurance and be much better able to survive the harsh conditions. They were excellent ranch horses at working cattle and were very easy keepers. Smokey D.'s dam was a registered Tennessee Walking Horse mare of show quality. From her, he inherited his long-striding running walk and passes it on to his foals. Smokey D. was bred and raised in Salcha, Alaska, and has been at Silver Point Farm for many years. Several of his grown offspring are in use in the breeding program at Silver Point Farm and are available for viewing. |
